As stewards of God’s abundant gifts, we are called to use our time, talents, and treasures to further His kingdom and serve one another in love. “Each of you should give whatever you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7) Let us continue to grow in faith and generosity, trusting that God will provide for all our needs as we faithfully serve Him.

From the Senior Pastor (November 2025)

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

— 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Having grown up in the Midwest, I am used to November days that have a chill in the air and leaves on the ground. While life in Florida might not bring falling leaves or chilly air, it still brings a season that invites us as Christians to pause and give thanks. The warm days and steady sunshine can serve as reminders to us that our hearts are called to a deeper kind of warmth—gratitude for all that God provides.

The apostle Paul writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” That’s not always easy. Life brings challenges—illness, loss, uncertainty and change. But through it all, the Lord remains faithful. Because of Jesus, we have a hope that no circumstances can take away.
It’s true that thanksgiving isn’t about everything going right. It’s about remembering that God is right here—in the middle of whatever we face. His love doesn’t fade with the seasons. His grace doesn’t depend on our moods or our situation. In Christ, we always have something to be thankful for: forgiveness, life and salvation.

(continued from weekly Messenger)

Martin Luther once said, “The heart overflows with thanksgiving when it knows that God has given us Himself in Christ.” That’s what we celebrate every Sunday as we gather around His Word and Sacraments—the ongoing gifts of grace, mercy and community that keep us anchored in His care.

As I think about Thanksgiving from a pastoral perspective, here is a brief list of what I am thankful for:

  • For God’s mercies, which are new every morning
  • For Christ’s cross, which I have the honor of preaching weekly to ears and hearts and minds, this Truth that sets us free
  • For the Holy Spirit, who is continually strengthening our faith
  • For You, dear reader, who are part of this family called the Church. I am grateful that we share God’s love together.

Thank you for many words of encouragement and support. Thank you for your prayers, for your love and for your commitment to making St. Michael an amazing congregation! May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

In Christ’s peace and thankfulness,

Pastor Dave

Operation Christmas Child

On Sunday, November 16, our Sunday school children will be putting together Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes during the Sunday school hour. This is a wonderful way for our kids to share God’s love with children around the world. We’re currently accepting donations to help fill the boxes. They can be dropped off at church before Sunday, November 16. You can make a big difference in a child’s life by donating new, small items that show care and bring joy. Below is a guide to what we’re collecting:

Toys & Gifts

Bring items that will delight and engage children of various ages!

  • Small dolls, stuffed animals, or toy cars
  • Building blocks or LEGO® sets, yo-yos, Slinky®, or interactive toys
  • Plastic animals, finger puppets, or other small figures
  • Soccer balls (with pumps), jump ropes, or puzzles
  • Coloring books or pads, dry watercolor sets, chalkboards and chalk, or stickers
  • Musical instruments like harmonicas, maracas, or small flutes
  • Binoculars, compasses, or other small adventure items
  • Jewelry-making kits, hobby sets, or a small backpack or purse

Personal Care Items

Help children care for themselves with practical essentials:

  • Toothbrush, washcloth, comb/brush, nail clippers and file
  • Water bottle or flashlight with extra batteries

School Supplies

Equip children to learn and grow:

  • Pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, markers, crayons, and colored pencils
  • Notebooks, index cards, and rulers
  • Glue sticks, small tape, and scissors
  • Calculators, pencil cases, or drawstring bags

Clothing & Accessories

Add a little comfort and fun:

  • Flip-flops or shoes, hats, sunglasses, hair accessories, or costume jewelry
  • Shirts, socks, undergarments, or winter hats, scarves, and mittens
  • Simple wristwatches or other small wearable items

From the Senior Pastor (October 2025)

Reformation Reflections

As we approach Reformation Sunday at the end of October, we give thanks to God for the bold confession of Martin Luther and the Reformers who held fast to the truth of God’s Word. At the heart of the Reformation are the five “solas,” five Latin phrases that capture the essence of the Gospel:

  • Sola scriptura (scripture alone): God’s Word is our final authority.
  • Sola gratia (grace alone): We are saved purely by God’s grace and not by our works.
  • Sola fide (faith alone): This grace is received through faith and not by human effort.
  • Solus Christus (Christ alone): Jesus Christ is the only Savior, the one mediator between God and man.
  • Soli Deo gloria (To God alone be the glory!): Our salvation and all we do is for God’s glory and not for our own glory.

I’m grateful for the opportunity we had last month to dig into these essential doctrines which remain the foundation of our faith and confession as Lutheran Christians. They are not dusty doctrines of the past but living realities that continue to shape our worship, witness and daily lives in Christ. We give thanks to the Lord for our confirmands who will profess their Christian faith before our congregation on Reformation Sunday. Please continue to keep them and all our young people in your prayers!

In a world filled with distractions, doubts and competing voices, it is more important than ever to remain rooted in God’s Word. Just as farmers prepare and tend to their fields, so too we are called to nurture the gift of faith that God has planted in our hearts. Through worship, prayer, Scripture study and receiving Christ’s gifts in Word and Sacrament, our faith is strengthened for daily life. Cultivating faith is not about earning God’s favor (Christ has already won that for us!) but about abiding in His promises so that we may stand firm in times of trial and shine His light into the world.

Looking Ahead: November Sermon Series – Overflowing with Thanks

As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, we will gather around God’s Word in a new sermon series titled Overflowing with Thanks. Together, we will reflect on what it means to live lives marked by gratitude—not only for material blessings but especially for the forgiveness, life and salvation we have in Christ. Each week will highlight how thankfulness flows out into every area of our lives: our families, our church, our community and beyond. We will also be celebrating and officially wrapping up our Find Your Five initiative.

Hopefully, you’ve had an opportunity to connect with five new people in our congregation. If not, you still have plenty of opportunities to do so even after Find Your Five wraps up. With the holidays soon approaching, it’s a wonderful opportunity to invite someone over for fellowship or to make a visit to one of our homebound members. Feel free to contact your elder, and they will be happy to put you in contact with members of our St. Michael family.

I’m grateful for you, for your family and for the St. Michael family! Together, may we always “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). May this month be a time of remembrance, renewal and rejoicing in Christ alone!

Blessings,
Pastor Dave Bass
